Half Life 2 Expansion Rumors Run Wild
Pretty much every Counter Strike / Half Life 2 news source is talking about the speculation surrounding an upcoming Half-Life 2 expansion from Valve. Among the more popular rumors are assertions that you'll be able to play Alyx, wield a multi-functional weapon called the Alyx Gun, and interact with a dog called Dog.
It seems the source of these rumors is UK mag PC Gamer, who is running a speculation piece on the expansion pack's content in its new issue. The article includes a quote attributed to Doug Lombardi of Valve: "We're interested in telling more about the universe we have created and therefore we will continue making sequels to the game. At the moment we're working on a game where you play as Alyx and her well-known robot dog - Dog... I can't tell you more at the moment." Mark Donald, editor of PC Gamer, feels some have misinterpreted the views held within the piece as fact. "The information in the article was based on what we as fans would like to see in the expansion pack from our reading of Half-Life 2's storyline and the sub plots it included," said Donald. "The features discussed are no more than speculation from excited Half-Life 2 players."
In reaction to the rumors now doing the rounds Lombardi has officially stated "Despite the rumors, Valve has not announced any plans for an HL2 expansion."
So, as usual when it comes to Valve, we'll just have to sit and wait until they decide to make an announcement. The whole Alyx thing looks extremely likely though, and the Alyx Gun - said to be a cross between a pistol, an SMG and a sniper rifle has shown up within the game's Source code. The inclusion of Dog wouldn't be surprising, although PC Gamer's piece speculates he won't be playable, but rather an interactive NPC.
