College Major in Video Games

Chicago's Columbia College will decide this spring if it's going to let some it's students major in video games. Yes, major in video games in college!

The course(s) would be focused on designing video games, not playing them. The video game industry is 7 billion dollar, and growing, industry. Developers who have worked on titles such as Half Life, Half Life 2, Far Cry, Brothers in Arms, Empire Earth, etc. command top dollar from their employers and get to make a more than comfortable living at designing what they enjoy - video games.

Columbia College would not be the first college to offer such a course - the University of Southern California, the University of North Texas and Westwood College in DuPage County, Ill., among others, already offer such courses. A master's program in gaming is available at Georgia Tech and at Carnegie Mellon University.

To me, this is just further proof that the video game industry is growing up and finally receiving the respect it deserves.
